PLAYTES: On The Table More Than a Poster: Why Visual Communication Matters in the Kitchen

One of my recent culinary assignments challenged me to create a visual job aid for the kitchen.

At first, it sounded simple—make a poster and turn it in.

But the deeper I got into the project, the more I realized it wasn’t really about the poster at all.

It was about communication.

The goal of the assignment was to create something that could help people who learn differently. Not everybody learns best by reading long instructions or sitting through lectures.

Some people learn visually.

Some learn through demonstrations.

Some need information broken down into simple, step-by-step actions.

As future culinary professionals, it’s our job to communicate in ways that help everybody succeed.

For my project, I decided to focus on something every kitchen depends on:

Proper handwashing.

It may not be the most exciting topic in culinary arts, but it might be one of the most important.

Food safety starts with the basics.

Before the recipes.

Before the techniques.

Before the plating.

It starts with clean hands.

So I created a visual guide that breaks the process down into clear, easy-to-follow steps that someone could understand quickly in a fast-paced kitchen environment.

No long paragraphs.

No unnecessary information.

Just simple communication and execution.

One thing I’ve learned throughout my culinary journey is that being a chef isn’t just about cooking.

It’s about leadership.

It’s about training.

It’s about communication.

It’s about creating systems that help people perform at their best.

Anybody can tell someone what to do.

A great leader makes sure people understand how to do it.

As I continue my education and grow as The Professor Chef, projects like this remind me that culinary arts goes far beyond the plate.

Every sign.

Every checklist.

Every training guide.

Every standard operating procedure.

Every visual aid.

They’re all part of creating a safer, stronger, and more successful kitchen.

Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just making great food.

It’s helping people succeed while making it.

Get You Some & Stay Focused.
